Role of the Crane Manufacturing Association of America

Posted on February 1, 2018 in Gantry Cranes

The Crane Manufacturing Association of America or CMAA is an independent trade organization and an affiliation within the materials handling industry.  They are an advocate for crane operating safety and are a major resource for different industry professionals.  Furthermore, they facilitate educational opportunities and events and have established engineering specifications which serve as the recognized industry design standards for:

  • crane components
  • integrated crane systems
  • overhead traveling cranes

Crane manufacturing companies that are members of the CMAA can co-mingle with crane experts and fellow manufacturers at sponsored events to discuss industry standards and current trends. With higher safety and quality standards, it is best to invest in U.S.-made cranes.

About the Organization

The CMAA was originally established by industry leading manufacturers in 1927 as the EOCI or the Electric Overhead Crane Institute.  Their goal at that time was to advance crane standardization, higher performance levels, and uniform quality throughout the industry.  It eventually evolved into the Crane Manufacturing Association of America 28 years later in 1955.  Member companies within the organization represent leaders of the overhead crane industry based and serve the US market from Canadian, Mexican, and American-based operations.

Additional Considerations

In addition to the above, The CMAA conducts its business in professional fashion and with a spirit of cooperation, enthusiasm, honesty, and integrity.  Furthermore, the CMAA has published an extensive buyer’s guide to assist professionals in the selection and procurement of materials handling equipment.  Additionally, there is a range of factors that should be considered when selecting and purchasing an overhead traveling crane.  These include the buyer’s budget, the system application, how the system will be used, and the operating speed required. As varied businesses have different requirements, it is important that all aspects are considered.
